Force sensing technology Microsoft adds twist

Microsoft Force sensing technologyMicrosoft Research is expecting not, as its already working towards integrating force-sensing technology that will enable gestures to twist on-screen imagery without crafting UMPCs out of flexible material. Essentially, the gurus behind the idea feel that implementing said tech would "turn an otherwise passive component that just holds the device together into an active input surface."

In the future, its likely that auditory cues would enable users to know when theyve applied enough pressure to cause a change, and of course, they expect it to work hand-in-hand with existing human-computer interfaces. Yeah, who needs keypads these days, anyway? Share your comments....

Windows XP Sometimes Faster Than Vista SP1

MS XP vs MS Vista SP1 Windows XP is faster than the new Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) in completing common consumer and business tasks on PCs coming out of sleep mode, but the differences are slight.

The performance tests, conducted by Principled Technologies Inc. on Microsofts behalf, showed that the older XP operating system remained faster than Vista SP1 in 61% of the operations grouped in a consumer test suite, and faster than Vista SP1 in 46% of the operations in the business-oriented head-to-head.

The results were from time trials held on identical PCs after theyd come out of standby, a power-saving feature in Windows. Vista, like other operating systems, including Apple Inc.s Mac OS X, calls the same mode "sleep."

However, when the same tests were run after a cold boot -- with the PCs power turned on, the OS booted and the scripts run after two minutes -- Vista SP1 came out on top in 74% of the tested consumer functions, and 66% of the business operations.

Differences Were Small
But no matter which operating system came out on top, the differences were small in virtually every case, said Principled Technologies. The total difference between XP and Vista SP1 in the 31 consumer tasks, for instance, was less than 5 seconds; of the 64 chores in the business scenario, 60 sported a difference of under half a second.

"Overall, Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP performed comparably on most test operations," Principled Technologies concluded in its report.

The tests were run on four systems -- two notebooks, two desktops -- from Dell Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Toshiba Corp.

A fifth system, another HP desktop, was omitted from the aggregate results because it, "produced unacceptably high variability in its test results," according to Principled. Interestingly, that system showed XP was faster than Vista SP1 in more chores than any of the other test machines. In the consumer test set, for example, XP was faster than Vista SP1 in 74% of the operations immediately after a reboot of the discarded HP.

Windows XP performed much poorer on the dropped HP in the business tests; it was faster than Vista SP1 only 31% of the time, lower than the average of the other four PCs. But when it came out of standby, XP beat Vista SP1 in 53% of the business-oriented jobs, a higher percentage than the other machines.

That, among other things, touched some nerves. Several users commenting on Microsofts official Vista blog -- where mention was made of the tests -- took exception to Principleds conclusion that Vista SP1 and XP produced comparable results.

"Hard to believe when every other review site on the planet shows pretty much hands down [Vista] is slower on similar hardware," said a user identified as Ceinach. "I didnt even think this was a point of argument anymore. This statement is fairly stunning.... Its like Microsoft is claiming the earth is still flat."

Computerworlds own tests, for instance, showed that file copying -- a function Microsoft has said it spent considerable effort improving in SP1 -- remained much slower on Vista than on Windows XP.

SP1 Doesnt Give Much of a Boost
Principled Technologies also put Vista SP1 up against the pre-service pack version of the operating system. When armed with SP1, PCs finished 87% of the consumer chores faster than plain Vista, and wrapped up more of the business operations faster as well. But the speed improvements were meager, said Principled. Most of the business tests were completed just fractions of a second faster by Vista SP1 than by Vista.

"Overall, Windows Vista SP1 was more responsive than Windows Vista on most comparisons," the report stated. "Performance differences between the two operating systems were typically less than a quarter second."

Samsung DuoCam SC D6550

Even in this third generation, the DuoCams camera and camcorder designs each lack the consistency youd expect from a dual function device. While the menus are attractive and well laid out for both modes, they look and feel very different. The camcorder uses a colorful text based, vertically scrolling menu, while the cameras menus are icon based and scroll horizontally.

The still camera lens has an automatic, built in cover, while the camera lens uses a separate, tethered lens cap. Most of the options for both still and video shooting are controlled using the menus and a small joystick mounted on the left side of the camera. There are a few additional buttons for functions such as activating the color slow shutter mode, deleting stills, and controlling tape playback.

A still camera style mode dial for selecting shooting modes when using the still camera functions sits at the top rear of the camera.

The zoom, start or stop, and still photo buttons are well placed for one handed operation, though those with large fingers may find that the mode dial makes pressing the still button somewhat difficult.

The LCD boasts a Manual Focus button, as well as a small rocker switch for adjusting focus. This works well and offers reasonably good precision, though fine adjustments are more difficult than theyd be with a focus wheel.

Both the memory card slot and the tape door are on the bottom of the SC-D6550, so youll need to remove the camera from the tripod to swap recording media.

The Samsung DuoCam SC-D6550s resolution lies in the middle of the range for similarly priced competitors. Behind the 10X optical zoom lens used for video is a 1/6 inch, 680.000 pixel CCD. The still camera lens features a 3X zoom (with a focal range equivalent to 38mm to 114mm on a 35mm camera) and is paired with a 5 megapixel sensor. The SC-D6550 offers a wide range of shooting modes for both video and still photos, from the one touch EasyQ button that puts all the cameras settings on automatic to completely manual control.

In camcorder mode, you can set both shutter speed and exposure. When shooting stills, you can choose aperture priority, shutter priority, or full manual control. Still aperture range is now f/2.8 through f/11, a marked improvement over the still camera in the SC-D6040. Manual focus is available in both modes as well.

Alienware M17x

The 17 inch widescreen, which is usually a sight to behold on a gaming laptop, is one of the M17xs weaker points. While the intense brightness levels (backed by two CCFL lamps) and awe inspiring 1.920 by 1.200 resolution are top notch, the screen itself has the characteristics of a mirror. The glare is magnified because the entire screen including the surrounding black borders is covered in glass. Half the time I was trying not to take notice of my reflection.

Changing the black Alienware background and minimizing surrounding light sources should help reduce glare. Its a departure from the boxy look of gaming laptops like the Falcon Northwest Fragbook DRX and Gateway P-7808u FX Edition, as the M17xs front side slopes downward at 45 degrees. Likewise, the back of the unit has a reverse slope, giving the entire frame a weird rhomboid look. The shape of the system is accentuated by an all metallic ensemble.

Gaming systems like the Sager NP8662 use a brushed aluminum lid, with plastics making up its base the M17x is completely covered in metals, and is more elegant than any other gaming laptop Ive reviewed, though not impervious to the scratches and smudges that are all too common on plastic frames. Youd be hard pressed to find any exposed screws on its underside (Alienware M17x has them tucked away neatly). Its a heavy system, too, because of the heavy metals.

Alienware M17x tips the scales at 12.5 pounds, about half a pound heavier than the monstrous Fragbook DRX (12 lbs). In fact, its one of the heaviest gaming laptops, outweighing even the P-7808u (8.9 lbs) and the Asus G71G-Q1 (9.1 lbs). Every vent, button, and key is implanted with LED lighting. The illuminated keyboard and the LED lining around the touch-pad are in plain sight and leap out at you. Upon closer inspection, youll notice that the power button, the feather touch keys, and its signature alien head logo are also illuminated.

Even more brilliant is that each of these pieces can be coordinated with up to 20 different colors. The keyboard and adjacent numeric keypad themselves are separated into four quadrants, each of which can be infused with a different color. All of this is done through Alienwares Command Center a software interface that lets you control the lighting effects, among other system settings. The full size keyboard and the textured touch-pad are engineered to perfection, though the mouse buttons shouldve been less resistant.

The scenery is lovely and the hawk and horses are beautiful, too. David Bisbals voice is exquisite; love it!!

Digale Lyrics in Spanish

Digale Lyrics in English

my heart couldnt forget
those sad dreamy eyes which i loved
i left her to conqure an illusion
and i lost her face and now i know that she is
everything i was looking for

chorus:
and now im here
looking for her again and
shes not here,she left
maybe you saw her tell her, that i always adored her
and that i never forgot her
that my life is a desert and im dieing out of thirst
and tell her also, that only next to her i can breathe
there is no shine in the stars
and the sun doesnt warm me
and im so alone here,i dont know where she left
please tell her

there were so many moments when i loved her
when i felt her touch and her scent is on my skin
every night i huged her next to me
i i covered her with kisses and beetwen my touches
i drove her crazy

Zynga buys NaturalMotion for 527 million announces 15 percent job cuts

Zynga Inc will shed 15 percent of its workforce to slash costs and buy mobile game developer NaturalMotion for $527 million to refresh a stalled games pipeline, moves that sent its stock soaring 20 percent in after-hours trading.

Chief Executive Officer Don Mattrick, hired last year, is taking aggressive action to revive a company that developed " Facebook Incs social network, but is now struggling to adapt to the rise of mobile gaming.

Zyngas largest acquisition to date, NaturalMotion is a 12-year-old studio that has created games like "Clumsy Ninja" for Apple Inc mobile devices. NaturalMotion is known for its Euphoria game engine, whose simulation technology has helped create powerful visuals in games like "Grand Theft Auto V".

"NaturalMotion significantly expands our creative pipeline and accelerates our mobile growth," chief operating officer Clive Downie said in an interview. "They are not an acquisition to fill a gap but one to expand our capabilities."

In July, Zynga hired Mattrick, the former head of Microsoft Corps Xbox business, to replace co-founder Mark Pincus as CEO. Mattrick has been busy managing a series of layoffs, cutting costs and reviewing the companys product pipeline.

The San Francisco-based game company said in a statement on Thursday it expects to cut 314 jobs. It also posted a narrower-than expected quarterly loss.

"The missive is kind of the framework of a turnaround," said Mike Hickey, an analyst at the Benchmark Company.

While the managements recent steps show "a ray of optimism", key metrics of user engagement were still weak, Hickey said. Zynga has to prove that it can use NaturalMotions games and talent to deliver titles that are long-lasting hits in a fad-driven mobile game market, he said.

The analyst pointed to the example of "Draw Something", a game Zynga acquired when it bought New York-based studio OMGPOP in 2012 for about $200 million. "Look at Draw Something...that was something that on the surface looked great but quickly evaporated," Hickey said.

Zynga, once among the hottest tech companies with rapid revenue growth from popular Facebook-based games, was caught off guard as the games industry saw a boom in mobile games. The company has renewed its focus on transitioning to smartphones and tablet titles, the increasingly preferred format for casual gamers.

Zyngas core business continued to deteriorate last quarter, but not as quickly Wall Street feared.

For the quarter ended Dec 31, Zyngas revenue fell to $176.4 million from $311.16 million a year prior, compared to analysts average estimate of $141.1 million.

Excluding certain items, it reported a net loss per share of 3 cents, a penny better than forecasts for a 4-cent loss per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company forecast first-quarter revenue in the range of $155 million to $165 million, surpassing Wall Streets estimates of $145.6 million.

"The guidance for 2014 was strong...it was in excess of what the Street was looking for and that shows the stabilization and expected re-growth of their business," Benchmark Company analyst Hickey said.

Zyngas shares soared to $4.26 after closing at $3.56 on the Nasdaq.

LG’S OPTIMUS 2X SETS WORLD RECORD

Powerful, Super-quick New LG Handset Recognized by Guinness World Records™ as World’s First Dual-Core Smartphone

LG Optimus 2X smartphone has been confirmed by Guinness World Records™ as the world’s First Mobile Phone to Use a Dual-core Processor. This technological leap gives the LG Optimus 2X a faster, more powerful performance, and robust multimedia entertainment features.

“LG is thrilled to hear that the LG Optimus 2X is officially recognized as the world’s first dual-core smartphone by the prestigious Guinness World Records,” said Mr. Somsak Athisaitrakul, Product Group Head of Mobile Communications, LG Electronics (Thailand). “The LG Optimus 2X is ushering in a new ‘dual-core’ era in the smartphone arena, with unprecedented levels of speed and performance. Combined with other unique features such as content mirroring through HDMI, the LG Optimus 2X is well positioned as a true premium Android smartphone.”

Frank Foley, Senior Vice President of Guinness World Records™, said, “Guinness World Records is proud to announce this new title and congratulates LG Optimus 2X on this achievement in the always fast-paced world of technology.”

LG first announced the LG Optimus 2X in December 2010, and unveiled it for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January of this year. The phone was launched in the same month in Korea, beating any of its rivals to the market, and has since been launched in other key markets as well.

LG Optimus 2X: Fast and Powerful Dual-Core Smartphone Experience
Developed by graphics processor powerhouse NVIDIA®, the dual-core Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip found in the LG Optimus 2X runs at a clock speed of 1GHz and boasts low power consumption and high performance for playing video and audio. Users can experience faster web browsing and smoother gameplay compared with single-core processors running at the same speed, as well as instantaneous touch response and seamless multitasking between applications.

An ode to Sharkon

In addition to introducing Compute Engine in GA this week, we launched a new website for Google Cloud Platform and a new set of Cloud Platform logos:

Now, none of this changes anything for you. New logos aren’t going to help you serve more requests-per-second (good news, you can already top 1 million). And they aren’t going to allow you to scale your caching capacity indefinitely or reduce your datastore costs (good news, dedicated memcache in App Engine already does that). And they aren’t going to provide you with an analytics tool that lets you query terabytes of data in seconds (that’s what Big Query is for).

But, they do allow us to reflect on what we have been able to do over the past 5 years with Google Cloud Platform.

In April 2008, when we launched Google App Engine, we introduced the first modern Platform as a Service. In fact, the term barely existed at the time. And, given that we were launching a new product, we needed a new icon. The marketing team decided that what App Engine needed was an engine. And because it was Google, the engine should be in the shape of a ‘G’. So they did what marketers do, and made a bunch of versions of this idea:

There was only one problem: none of the people who had built App Engine actually liked the logo. It didn’t represent the next-generation technology that they were building. In fact, it looked like a combination of a printing press (which Gutenberg first started tinkering with in 1436) and an internal combustion engine (conceived of by Huygens in 1680 and first built by Rivaz in 1807). It didn’t reflect a product that allowed you to deploy an application with one-click, scale it effortlessly to serve millions of users, and fundamentally change how web applications are developed.

So, three of App Engine’s early engineers went back to the whiteboard. Literally. Rafe Kaplan, Alon Levi and Brett Slatkin thought about what the product should look like. And it wasn’t a printing press. And it wasn’t an internal combustion engine. And it wasn’t shaped like a G. These are some of the concepts that Brett sketched on the whiteboard in Building 44 at the Googleplex in Mountain View:

The team was much happier with these; they felt like they were inspiring. And these whiteboard sketches were sent to a graphic designer who came back with three concepts for a final logo:

Well, no one really loved these either. In the words of one member of the App Engine team, “A looks like a fan, B looks like a washing machine, and C looks like a washing machine with fins.” So, to cut a long story short, they did some more revisions, and eventually Google designer Micheal Lopez landed on a logo that everyone (well, most people) loved:

It evoked both the power as well as simplicity of App Engine. To Rafe Kaplan, the new icon looked like a shark, so he called it ‘Sharkon’ - a name that quickly spread among the team.

And, for the past 5 years, Sharkon has been the face of App Engine. It’s found it’s way into many forms - whether made into a plush doll, knit into yarn, painted using acrylics by artist Nan Washare, done in a single brushstroke of calligraphy, poured into latte art, or made into a punch-card reader when we announced on April Fools Day in 2009, that App Engine would be supporting Fortran:

Over these 5 years, a lot else has happened. App Engine has grown to support new runtimes, including Python, Java, Go and PHP. And, we’ve introduced a host of other cloud computing products, including Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, BigQuery and others. Together, this family makes it easy for you to take advantage of the scale, speed, and consistency of Google’s infrastructure. And, these services work great together - so that you can truly take advantage of an integrated Cloud Platform.

The new App Engine logo is designed to fit in alongside the rest of the Cloud Platform family, while still paying homage to Sharkon. These new logos represent the toolkit in your garage. They’re the nuts and bolts with which you can create just about anything. So, pick up any one of them (or all of them) and start building.

Oh, and watch this space. We’ve got more exciting announcements coming up - the kind that go deeper than a logo refresh.

Announcing Google Shopper for iPhone

(Cross-posted on the Google Merchant Blog)

As we announced last November, millions of people have downloaded Google Shopper for Android to help them shop on the go. Today, we’re excited to let you know that Google Shopper, our popular Android shopping application, is now available for iPhone as a download in the App Store. Google Shopper turns your iPhone into a shopping assistant, so you can:

  • Learn more about products and read relevant user reviews
  • Compare prices at online and local stores
  • Save and share products for later consideration

Let’s say you’re planning a special meal for Valentine’s Day - but you need a cast-iron skillet to get the recipe just right. With Shopper, finding one is easy enough: just type in “cast iron skillet” or say it using Voice Search. Then, from the results, you can choose a specific product that appeals to you. Alternatively, if you were in the store and wanted to see product reviews, you could also scan the barcode of a particular product.

Once you’ve selected a product result, you can compare prices across web retailers, and even find where you can purchase the item nearby, which is especially useful for those of us who are last-minute shoppers. For some retailers, we also provide inventory information so you can see if a particular store branch has the item in stock, has limited availability, or if the item is out of stock and you should head to a different store.

If you’re not sure about making a purchase or are building out a gift list, you can “star” products for future consideration. You can also share items with friends across your social network to let them know about products you love or great deals youve found.

You can download Google Shopper for free in the App Store. Shopper is available for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 with iOS 4.0+ in English only for the United States and the UK.

We hope you enjoy shopping with Google Shopper!

Facebook Phone Android mobile phone Facebook Home!

Yes just a day after the mobile phone celebrated its 40th birthday, Facebook wowed us on April 4th with something new that it hopes will make your Android mobile phone or device even more useful as a Facebook Phone.

Facebook unveiled Home - a new software that is designed to give it more prominence on mobile phones powered by Android, an operating system developed by Google – huh? Yes Facebook seeking prominence on Google’s Android…

Why does it matter?
Because more and more we are now accessing social networks from our mobile devices rather than from desktop computers and because mobile advertising revenues are growing fast, albeit from a low base [add ching-ching here].
It’s the only way Facebook can maintain a robust mobile presence and prevent rivals from siphoning off mobile users – and miss out on a potentially massive source of new revenue.
EMarketer, a research firm, actually reckons Facebook is on track to win 11% of the $13.6 billion likely to be spent around the world on mobile ads this year.
Facebook Phone?
Perhaps over the past few days, you have seen speculation that Facebook was working on a phone of its own, or at least on a mobile operating system to rival Android or Apple’s iOS.
Experts have said that dabbling in hardware at this stage of its development would be a huge risk for Facebook and developing a rival operating system would risk alienating Apple and Google, whose mobile platforms have helped power its advertising growth.
Enter Facebook’s Home
Home, which is a group of Facebook apps, avoids both pitfalls – the risk of losing advertising revenue to competition and the failure on the Facebook phone.
Among other things, it converts a phone’s home screen (and lock screen) to Facebook’s Newsfeed, allowing people to get updates on what their friends are doing without having to launch a dedicated app each time they want news.
A phone using Home will also notify you when your friends are doing something new, as well as alerting you to new data from other apps.
Another feature is a tool called ‘Chat Heads’ that combines Facebook’s message system with a phone’s regular SMS message offering. This means messages pop up on the home screen along with the senders profile picture, which is enclosed in a small circle.
The first phone built to showcase Home, which will be made by HTC with wireless service provided by AT&T, will go on sale in America on April 12th for about $100. Users of some other Android-powered devices made by Samsung and HTC will be able to download the software starting the same day and Facebook says it will roll out Home more broadly later in the year.

But not, it seems, to rival operating systems yet. At the launch of Home, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s boss, made a point of stressing how “open” Android was and how easy it was to change the look of the operating system without too much work.

Apple is likely to prove a much tougher nut to crack, as it exercises much tighter control over the look and feel of its operating system. Microsoft, which has a close relationship with Facebook, may be the next Home base.

Facebook is convinced that people will want a phone designed around people rather than apps.
Some no doubt will. But previous attempts to produce “Facebook phones”, including the ChaCha from HTC, which allowed people to post photos directly to Facebook with the press of a physical button, have hardly been wildly successful.
And folk are likely to be less than thrilled when Facebook starts pushing ads onto the home screens of their phones, which will inevitably happen given the firm’s track record. So don’t expect Home to be a home run for the social network.
Excepts taken from the economist.
